The moon is black, blocking the sun and plunging the world into darkness. A female figure stands out from a group: one of the prophets or seers that Karl Hofer portrayed on several occasions. The viewer is not initiated into what she can see in the sky. The uncanny orange-yellow glow of the heavens suggests the reflection of many fires after a bombing raid. Hofer's accentuation of the flaming sky is a reminder of the allied bombing war, which he experienced quite personally in Berlin: in March 1943 he lost his studio with all his works, and in November his apartment as well. Because of his works, Hofer had been defamed by the National Socialist press since 1931 and lost his position as a university teacher in 1934.
