Ludwig von Hofmann and many progressive artists of his day responded to the dark, momentous scenes painted by their predecessors with bright, translucent colours. Their themes were not the heroic deeds of the past, but images that, if anything, transcended time. This “Sun”, for example, depicts naked, youthful figures, male and female, in a spring landscape strewn with blossom. Unlike representations of modern urban society with its social and political conflicts, von Hofmann projects heavenly harmony between humanity and nature.

The lavishly designed frame also reflects this desire for wholeness and harmony. The proponents of “Jugendstil”, to which this painting must be ascribed, saw themselves as more than artists. They also designed furniture, utensils and clothes, seeking to fashion the entire living environment in accordance with their aesthetic principles.
