From 1921 to 1926, Alexander Kanoldt investigated the “still world” of objects in over seventy paintings. Due to its warm colours and reticent sensuality, this still-life proves far less cool than its smooth surface might originally suggest. The objects arranged on and below the table in this painting become actors relating to each other on stage: the sword-shaped leaves of the amaryllis cross through the hard folds of the yellow curtain, the well-read book flirts with the open cigar box, the pink petals of the plant and the flowery pattern on the tea cup enter into competition with the red colour of the cloth and the wine bottle.
