The elegant lady in the blue satin dress is Grete Robitscheck, Issai Kulvianski’s first wife. They were married from 1919 to 1929. A year earlier, the artist had also portrayed their daughter Erika (Kiki). These two paintings, coolly de¬tached in the style of New Objectivity, are among the few surviving works by the artist from that period. This is owed to Max Dungert (1896–1945), a friend and colleague. Just after Kulvianski, who was Jewish, fled to Palestine to escape the Nazis in 1933, Dungert salvaged some of Kulvianski’s works from the studio and sent them on to Tel Aviv.
