Text

Walter Leistikow came to Berlin in 1883. As a co-founder of both the Vereinigung der XI and the Berlin Secession, he developed into one of the key protagonists of the Berlin art scene. A pupil of Norwegian painter Hans Gude, Leistikow progressed to a modern, romantic understanding of nature, placing great emphasis on the atmo-sphere of a landscape rather than aiming for mere reproduction. The highly truncated motif of the painting “From the Mark” evidences a modern view of the deserted, melancholic landscape of lakes and pines around Berlin. Leistikow adopted design elements of Art Nouveau in his stylised portrayal of the tree trunks. He also experimented with similar elements in his graphic art works.
