The exhibited painting by Ludwig Meidner demonstrate how profoundly the artist expe¬rienced the sense of impending disaster that prevailed before and during World War I. In the Bible, the Last Judgment is the day when Christ will pronounce his verdict on the living and the dead, dispatching them down to Hell or up to Heaven. No divine ruler can be seen in Meidner's vision of the end of the world. Under glowering clouds, terrified people totter in all directions. They look with fearful expressions straight at the viewer, therefore, obliging him to bear witness to the event. With this work, Ludwig Meidner completed his series of “Apocalyptic Landscapes”.
