Text

Ernst Neuschul was the son of a Bohemian ironmonger. His family belonged to the respectable Jewish community in his birthplace Aussig (now Ústí nad Labem). In 1920 he arrived in Berlin and joined the Novembergruppe. In 1927 he was taken on by the gallery Neumann-Nierendorf.
As a free-thinking Jewish painter, Neuschul was subjected to antisemitic harassment from 1933. When he held an exhibition on Schöneberger Ufer, his works were seized and destroyed. Immediately after this he returned to Aussig.
In 1939 he managed to escape to Britain. His mother and other members of the family were murdered at Auschwitz.
After the war Neuschul stayed in Britain and changed his name to Ernest Norland.
