Art critic Paul Westheim was alongside Herwath Walden an important promoter of the painter Iwan Puni. Before 1933, the still life was part of his collection. As a Jew and an uncompromising supporter of modern art, Westheim was directly threatened by the Nazi takeover. He fled to Paris and left the painting with his lover, the art historian Charlotte Weidler. As a supporter of his work in exile, she also found herself in danger. Weidler emigrated to New York in 1939 and sold the painting several years after Westheim’s death in 1963 to Leonard Hutton Galleries. The Swiss collector Hermann Berninger acquired the work and gave it to Berlinische Galerie in 1988.
