Inspired by the Frenc Impressionists, whose works he had become familiar with in Paris in 1881 and 1883, Lesser Ury focused on the visual delights of the metropolis for his subject matter. He became a painter of Berlin’s streets and squares, especially of different nocturnal moods with a myriad of reflecting light. In Berlin Street Scene, outlines are blurred in the streets wet with rain, shapes dissolve and the result is a play of colours, whose atmosphere di-rectly reproduces the appeal of the city at night. When Ury exhibited the picture at the Galerie Gurlitt in Berlin 1890, the modern technique of paint application aroused indignation among his contemporaries.
