The painting shows artist Martin Kippenberger (1953 - 1997).
Among the artists of his generation, he showed the greatest
consistency in viewing image-creation as a key purpose of his
work. In 1978 Kippenberger moved to Berlin for three years and
founded the “Kippenberger Office” together with gallery owner
Gisela Capitain. For a short time he also worked as manager of
the Kreuzberg punk club SO 36, where he organised concerts,
exhibitions and events. He stood out among his artist
colleagues, wearing a formal suit as we can see in this painting,
which he commissioned from Rainer Fetting.
Kippenberger initiated a change in the (self-) conception of the
artist: rather than seeing himself as a shaman and healer of
social inadequacies, he appears as the manager of his own
career. In this sense, Fetting’s Hommage to Kippenberger was
also a programmatic painting for the “Neue Wilde”. By staging
themselves as a group of artists, in the early period they were
pursuing marketing strategies with equal ingenuity.
