In his designs Manfred Schiedhelm investigated new lightweight construction methods and the
elementary geometric form of the sphere. He
discovered inspiration, for example, in the pioneering buildings at the world exhibition Expo 67 in Montreal. He planned his project for the community centre in Sprendlingen as a core structure with several domes: the latter consisting of membranes with alternating transparent and opaque layers; steel platforms characterised the interior.
He designed his concept for the Centre Pompidou in Paris as both building and urban quarter with movable sections for a library, theatre and
museum. The idea was to cover these with a dome stabilised by a net of steel ropes. The inner area would have been laid out as a garden space on different levels, with wooded areas for cultural
activities.
