At the race course Benno Berneis pursued his passion for horses, studying their anatomy and movements. In the painting “Rider by the Sea” both horse and rider are distinguished by great dynamism and drama. In 1913, the year of the painting's production, Berneis already had an opportunity to show it at the Berlin Secession's 26th presentation in the exhibition centre at 208/209 Kurfürstendamm. The painting was hung in the large, prestigious central hall between Lovis Corinth's “Carpet Dealer” and Max Beckmann's “Sinking of the Titanic”. Contemporary art criticism often cited Berneis and Beckmann in the same breath, as both artists' works were characterized by a highly expressive, figurative style.
