Hans Hollein’s design for the international competition held for Kulturforum was awarded first prize and suggested for realization. In his design, the architect planned Matthäikirchplatz to be expanded to Potsdamer Straße, which would be moved south of its current location and lined with a curved colonnade. In addition, he suggested a tower visible from afar as a “bible museum” and a “city cloister” in addition to the St. Matthew Church. A ramp was to serve as the link to the Neue Nationalgalerie. The buildings of Scharoun would remain untouched in their autonomy in the urban planning. Although the Senate decided to realize Hollein’s plans in 1986, it was never implemented after reunification.
