Lotte Laserstein was one of the first women to study at the Berlin Art Academy. From 1927, in her studio in Wilmersdorf, she demonstrated her command of the profession in confident self-portraits, posing with smock, brush and palette. This work, dating from that year, shows Laserstein without her painter’s attributes. In a sleeveless blouse, her head tilted to one side, she thoughtfully returns the viewer’s gaze. A detailed urban landscape can be seen through a studio window. The close framing and atmospheric shadow play lend intimacy to the scene. The only distance is created by the artist’s probing expression. Lotte Laserstein’s promising career came to an end when the Nazis seized power. In 1937 she emigrated to Sweden.
