For his design for the German pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, Sergius Ruegenberg developed a building with intermittent wall surfaces and randomly variable spatial forms. Three zigzag ribbons shape the roof landscape. They seem to float over narrow supports. The idea was not realized, but made the second round of competition.
Thanks to this recognition, Ruegenberg was invited to submit an additional design for the German pavilion at Expo 70 planned for Osaka, Japan. He altered his ideas from his Montreal plans, lending the structure greater closure and clarity. But he retained the flowing organization of the open interior as well as his rejection of closed wall surfaces. At night, projections and various light sources were to immerse the aluminum-clad building in color.
