Felix Nussbaum depicts some turbulent goings-on at Pariser Platz in Berlin: a group of young artists are unloading their paintings in front of the Prussian Academy of the Arts, while its distinguished professors parade past. In the background one can see Max Liebermann, the president of the academy. On the roof of his house, he is working on a self-portrait passed to him by the goddess of victory, Victoria. The painting’s subject is a generation conflict: the artists of Max Liebermann’s age – still referred to as “rebels” at the start of the century – have become established in office at the beginning of the 1930s. From the point of view of the younger artists, they are now defending a rigid art tradition in their turn and thus standing in the way of new trends.
