After moving from Munich to Berlin in 1901, Lovis Corinth first stayed at the house of his friend Fritz Rumpf in Potsdam. In his “Red Villa” on Lake Heiligensee, the painter, writer and art collector Fritz Rumpf (1856-1927) welcomed a wide circle of artists, with Corinth, the painters Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt or the architects Peter Behrens and Henri van de Velde among them. In the autumn of 1901, Corinth moved to Berlin and joined the “Berliner Secession”. He got his studio-apartment in Klopstockstrasse through Walter Leistikow. Besides the picture “The Family of the Painter Fritz Rumpf”, Corinth’s portrait of Fritz Rumpf is the first painting he created in Berlin.
