Fred Thieler is regarded as one of the most important representatives of German Abstract Expressionism. After initial experience with representational painting, he dedicated himself exclusively to abstraction in the 1950s. In the 1960s he began to work on his picture carriers as they lay on the ground. He poured his paints using watering cans and buckets, directing their flow by folding, bending and lifting up parts of the picture carrier.

The intention was for painting to stop represent¬ing specific content and make a direct impact on the viewer instead. Applying paint with expansive gestures functioned as the central means of expression.
