A shortage of art supplies in Berlin after the Second World War was probably one reason why Werner Heldt painted this picture on a door. In his sketch-like depiction of the war-ravaged city, some of the buildings in the background are intact while others lie in ruins. The houses are bleak: dark windows repel the curious gaze. The vague hints of faces in the foreground align with this image of a traumatised city. Their grimaces suggest ghosts or demons: bombed-out Berlin is still clearly haunted by its recent history.
