The lack of artist’s materials at the end of hostilities was probably one reason why Heldt sketched his picture on a door. The buildings in the background are partly intact and partly in ruins – much of the city was reduced to rubble. The houses convey a gloomy mood: black windows deny entry to the curious gaze. Like the wooden door itself, they have been deprived of their function. The diffuse faces in the foreground are likewise part of the picture of this traumatised city. These masks can be read as ghosts or demons: war-torn Berlin is still haunted by its recent history.
