The moon is black, blocking the sun and plunging the world into darkness. A female figure stands out from an exhausted group. She resembles the female prophet or seer that Karl Hofer portrayed in several other works. The eerie orange-yellow glow of the heavens suggests the Allied air raids that Hofer experienced personally: in March 1943 he lost his studio in Berlin along with all his works stored there, and his home as well in November. Although Hofer’s works were defamed by the National Socialists as “degenerate”, his thinking was in line with an anti-modernist cultural pessimism.
