Text

The painter and printmaker Emil Orlik was much in demand when public figures in Berlin needed a portrait. He established his reputation with Japonist woodcuts, informal sketches and technically demanding etchings. This sensitive portrait shows another painter and printmaker: Joachim Rágóczy (1895–1975). From 1913 Rágóczy had studied under Orlik, who opened his class in printmaking and book illustration at the state school attached to Berlin’s Museum of Decorative Art in 1905. From 1919 until Orlik’s death in 1932, Rágóczy was his assistant, printer and private secretary. Orlik’s other students included George Grosz, Hannah Höch and Karl Hubbuch. Rágóczy's own artistic work was largely forgotten for a long time, but in recent times it is being shown again more frequently.
