Apart from working as an art critic, publisher, editor and director, William Wauer was also a fine artist. From 1918 onwards, Wauer took part in exhibitions at the legendary gallery Der Sturm run by Herwarth Walden. In the years that followed he primarily built a reputation for himself as a portrait sculptor. Wauer was one of the first artists to apply the principles of Cubist painting to sculpture. His expressive Cubist approach culminates in this bust of Herwarth Walden. It displays a radical formal language: Wauer abstracts the head and reduces it to geometric elements. At the same time, it is a masterly rendition of the sitter's characteristic features.
