Text

While in Dresden in 1922, the Hungarian Lajos d’Ebneth first saw abstract works by El Lissitzky (1890–1941), László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) and Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948). He was so overwhelmed that he destroyed his early impressionist and symbolist work. In 1923 d’Ebneth travelled via Berlin to the Netherlands, where he made contact with the De Stijl group. Formally his works are comparable to these pioneers of constructivism, but d’Ebneth never adhered strictly to their stylistic rules. Instead he also used muted shades and worked with colour to create the illusion of space.
