Lajos d’Ebneth arrived in Munich via Budapest in 1921 to study painting under Franz von Stuck. Visiting Dresden in 1922, he was so overwhelmed by emotion on his first encounter with works by El Lissitzky, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Kurt Schwitters that he destroyed his early Impressionist and Symbolist paintings. Passing through Berlin, he reached the Netherlands in 1923, where he made contact with the De Stijl group. In formal terms, his works can be compared with the strict construction principles of these artists. At the same time, he discarded the ascetic rules of the original Constructivists: D’Ebneth used broken colour and colour illusions, as he does here by overlaying the blue square.
