For Expo 67 in the Canadian city of Montreal, the architectural firms Rolf Gutbrod and Frei Otto
de-signed a large-scale solution that was to
remain an improvisation and never become a permanent structure. A construction of wide-spanning net of cables was the precondition for the project. The result was a large form that covered an inner space divided into individual areas. Eight masts bore the weight of the cable net. Their different heights allowed for the right spatial accents to be set. The bracing of the net construction was achieved by way of a polyester textile membrane with PVC coating. The ground beneath the canopy was terraced, so that the visitor unknowingly moved in an upward spiral. Scaffolding made using newly developed construction
elements served as a second exhibition level.
