Thomas Zipp’s works test the tenuous boundary between reason and madness, science and the occult. In particular, he explores the experience of ego dissolution triggered by drugs, hypnosis, dreams or psychosis.

“Faces” consists of a painting and a life-sized figure. The painting depicts a dark mountain landscape. Upon closer scrutiny a huge face appears, like a mirror of the self in a dream. The wooden figure in front of the image seems to be a guardian but could equally be intended as a proxy for the viewer.

Collection Online is undergoing a revamp. The new version will go live in early 2024. The collections can still be searched as usual but the data will not be refreshed until the new portal is released.

The section ‘Permanent Exhibition’ is an exception. The current selection can always be viewed here.

Some titles of works in the Berlinische Galerie holdings contain discriminatory language. The plan for the new version of Collection Online from 2024 is that racist terms in titles will no longer be displayed unmarked.
