Is this graceful figure a man, a woman or neither? This work by Julie Wolfthorn is known variously as “Flute Player” and “Woman Playing Flute”. It shows a young faun or satyr (as the pointed right ear suggests). These forest creatures from classical mythology were traditionally male, but in the 19th century it was thought that satyrs could also be female. Shimmering patches of sun and green shadows cause the figure to melt into the foliage. The true focus of this work is the yearning for a life lived in harmony with nature.
