Text

Not many works by the painter Lis Happe-Richter have been identified. In this naturalistic full-body portrait she lovingly depicts her four-year-old daughter Rotraut. With her fashionable bob, Sunday dress and black patent leather shoes, the little girl gazes dreamily out of the frame. In the 1930s Rotraut Richter (1915–1947) became a celebrated star of stage and cinema. Her film début came in 1932 for the abortion drama “The First Right of the Child”, which was banned by the Nazis. She scored her greatest big-screen success in 1936, when she played an animal-loving flower-seller in “The Violet of Potsdamer Platz”. She died in 1947 after an operation for appendicitis.
