In their “Pandemonic Manifesto” at the beginning of the 1960s, Eugen Schönebeck and Georg Baselitz declared ugliness, obscenity and blasphemy to be the central themes of a new kind of figurative painting. Schönebeck’s creatures do, indeed, resemble visions from a pandemonic dream landscape. In this depiction of the crucifixion, Schönebeck presents the body as a mirror of the tormented soul. This man being crucified symbolises existential human despair. A jellyfish lies alongside him. Its scientific name – “medusa” – is a reference to Greek myth: Medusa was a terrifying winged being with snakes instead of hair. Anyone who looked at her was turned to stone.
