Text

El Lissitzky was one of the most important representatives of Russian avant-garde art. For him, the path to abstraction provided a possible means of visualising the radical social changes after the Russian Revolution. Under the influence of his fellow artist Kasimir Malevich, as from 1919 Lissitzky developed several paintings, drawings and reliefs that he termed “Proun”. The Proun Room reconstructed here was produced for the “Great Berlin Art Exhibition” in 1923. For this, Lissitzky brought together geometric forms to create a physically accessible composition in space. The chromatic spectrum of the materials used is limited to the non-colours black, grey, white, and the natural colour of wood.
