The German Jewish painter Anne Ratkowski fled to Belgium in 1938 to escape sanctions imposed by the Nazi regime. One of her first works after emi-grating was “Kitchen Still Life with Herrings”. From the mid-1920s, Ratkowski turned increasingly to still life and domestic scenes; she continued her artistic explorations in exile under straitened circum-stances. When the war was over, the artist held her first solo show at the Brussels gallery Le Régent, reaping an enthusiastic response in the press.
