Göta Tellesch was one of West Berlin’s most innovative abstract artists. From 1961 she experimented with spectral colours and these became a constant feature of her stripe paintings in the ensuing years. A trip to the United States inspired her to create diaphanous, immaterial spaces of colour that evoke broad horizons. Tellesch compared these images with states of meditation for which there are no verbal concepts. In 1968 , seeking to keep the materiality of paint to a minimum, Tellesch began to use spray guns, producing cloudy horizontal stripes on gauze or PVC. Boxes behind the gauze reinforce the illusion of an infinite space of coloured light.
