The Berlinische Galerie's artist archives are the museum's storehouse of knowledge and preserve a diverse written memory: from extensive correspondence and rare printed matter to diaries, manuscripts and scattered notes, documents are collected, preserved and their contents researched here. They come from artists, artist groups, gallery owners and art historians who have shaped the development of art and culture in Berlin.

Ferdinand Möller (1882–1956) was a leading gallery owner of German modernism between 1917 and 1956. His written estate became part of the Berlinische Galerie collection in 1984. From 2006 to 2012, this estate was scholarly evaluated, specifically recording the artworks mentioned in the business and artist correspondence and documenting the transactions relating to them and the people involved. This targeted evaluation and the processing of other holdings serves international provenance research and creates a basis for the academic study of the art trade.
