Lovis Corinth chose a narrow portrait format to depict the ancient greek poet Homer (dates of birth and death unknown) and the italian poet Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533) respectively. Their epics inspired the themes for a cycle he painted for the wealthy Berlin entrepreneur Ludwig Katzenellenbogen (1877–1944) and his first wife Estella (1886–1991). The cycle as a whole, intended for a dining room, consists of eleven paintings. The six works now in the Berlinische Galerie’s collection are on display here.
