Intoxication and ecstasy feature prominently in Lovis Corinth’s art. Bacchanalia, ancient festivities celebrating the god of wine, were a frequent theme. Sometimes he even portrayed himself as Bacchus. The dancer here is identified with the cult by a crown of vine leaves, the leopard at his feet and the thyrsus or staff of Dionysus. Vivid colours, free brushwork and overstated theatricality bear out Corinth’s desire to paint in a modern style while upholding the tradition of storytelling. “Bacchant” was purchased in 2021 with funds from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the State of Berlin the museum’s association of friends and in-house budget.
